Saturday, October 19th, 2019 at 8:00 pm.
This lecture will take place at Cary Hall.
A majority of the world’s TV broadcast animation comes from Japan. How did this happen? Why is anime now a global phenomenon? How Japanese is it anyway? This multimedia presentation is aimed at anime experts and curious newcomers alike. Ian Condry, a cultural anthropologist and professor at MIT in Global Studies and Languages, is the author of two books, The Soul of Anime: Collaborative Creativity and Japan’s Media Success Story, and Hip-Hop Japan: Rap and the Paths of Cultural Globalization. He is also the founder and organizer of the MIT/Harvard Cool Japan research project, and the Dissolve Music@MIT sound festival.
